Ocean Freight Services

Ocean freight companies offer a variety of services to cater to different shipping needs. Here are some of the primary ocean freight services:

USA Sea Freight
Global Sea Freight
Consolidated Sea Freight
Shipping Cars By Sea

Full Container Load (FCL): This service is ideal for shippers with enough cargo to fill an entire container. FCL offers more security and faster transit times compared to other options.

Less than Container Load (LCL): LCL is perfect for smaller shipments that don’t require a full container. Multiple shippers’ goods are consolidated into one container, making it a cost-effective option for smaller businesses.

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo): This service is specifically designed for wheeled cargo like cars, trucks, and heavy machinery.

Break Bulk: Used for cargo that is too large or heavy to fit in standard shipping containers, break bulk involves loading individual pieces onto the vessel.

Refrigerated Container (Reefer) Services: Essential for temperature-sensitive goods like food products and pharmaceuticals.

The Benefits of Using a Licensed Ocean Freight Forwarder

Compliance
Experienced, licensed ocean freight forwarders reduce the risk of delays and product loss by completing every requirement, from packing containers to submitting customs declarations.

To complete their delivery, shippers must satisfy all international laws and procedures, including import and export restrictions. Missing even a single form can lead to fines and seizure of the goods.

Security
Licensed freight forwarders choose the right packaging and containers to protect your goods from damage or theft. They prescreen the third parties transporting the goods, reducing the likelihood of any security-related issues with your shipment.

Importers are responsible for ensuring that goods brought in under their authority are kept secure in transit and that the documentation accurately describes the merchandise. Failure to comply can result in fines as well as seizure and destruction of the cargo.

Experience
Licensed forwarders and carriers understand the variable nature of ocean freight. They can anticipate—and then avoid—delays due to weather, port labor issues, or other concerns to get your goods to their destination as quickly as possible.

While the stories of lost goods are mostly tall tales, the reality is that the wrong container can damage your cargo. And not understanding how shipment works—along the entire route—can result in loss or delays in your product’s arrival.

Cost-savings
Experienced, licensed ocean freight forwarders can track the progress of your goods and eliminate downtime. They can facilitate smaller shipments by combining their sea transport with other less-than-container loads.

Without forwarders, shippers are in the dark when it comes to choosing the right shipping cargo container. They’re also left to decide on their own which vendors are reliable and what other exporters they can trust to share their container.

FAQ

Q: How long does the sea freight shipment usually take?

A: The transit time can vary greatly. For a short - haul route like Hong Kong to Taiwan, it might be 1 - 2 days. For a long - haul route such as from China to the United States, it could be anywhere from 10 - 30 days depending on the route and any potential delays.

Q: What are the different types of containers available for my shipment?

A: There are 20 - foot dry containers (TEU), 40 - foot dry containers (FEU), refrigerated containers (reefers) for perishable goods, open - top containers for oversized cargo, and flat - rack containers for extremely large or oddly shaped items.

Q: How do you calculate the freight cost?

A: Freight cost is calculated based on factors such as the type of container, the volume or weight of the cargo (whichever is greater), the shipping route, and any additional services required. For example, if your cargo is a high - value item and requires extra security, there may be an added cost.

Q: How can I track my shipment?

A: The agent will usually provide a tracking number or access to an online tracking system where you can monitor the progress of your shipment. This may show details like the vessel's location, estimated time of arrival at different ports, and the status of customs clearance.

Q: What insurance options are available for my sea freight?

A: There are basic carrier liability insurance which has limited coverage, and you can also purchase additional cargo insurance. The agent may be able to recommend insurance providers and explain the coverage levels, such as all - risk insurance which covers a wide range of perils during transit.

Q: What is the maximum weight and volume limit per container?

A: A 20 - foot container typically has a maximum payload of around 24 - 28 tons and a volume capacity of about 33 cubic meters. A 40 - foot container can carry around 26 - 28 tons (although some lines may allow up to 30 tons) and has a volume of approximately 67 cubic meters.
