What is Global Sea Freight
Global sea freight, also referred to as ocean freight, is the transport of goods by ship over the sea. It plays a crucial role in global logistics and international trade, offering a reliable and cost-effective method for moving large quantities of goods.as a fundamental component of cross-border trade, sea freight enables economies to import and export goods on a scale that is not always feasible with other transportation modes like air or road.
Benefits of Global Sea Freight
Dependability of Ocean Freight Services
Ocean freight services demonstrate a high level of dependability, with well-established schedules and routes. Shipping companies have extensive experience in managing logistics and ensuring that goods are delivered on time. While unforeseen circumstances such as weather conditions or port congestion may cause minor delays, the overall reliability of ocean freight remains robust.
Capacity and Flexibility of Ocean Freight
When it comes to moving large volumes of goods or handling different types of cargo, ocean freight services provide businesses with the necessary capacity and flexibility.
Handling Large Volumes of Goods
Cargo ships have spacious storage areas and the ability to accommodate large amounts of goods. This is particularly advantageous for businesses involved in industries such as manufacturing, retail, or agriculture that require the transportation of significant quantities of products. Ocean freight enables businesses to efficiently transport high volumes of goods in a single shipment.
Flexibility in Types of Cargo
Unlike other modes of transportation that may have limitations in terms of cargo types, ocean freight offers flexibility. Ships can transport a wide range of goods, including dry bulk cargo, liquid cargo, oversized cargo, and even perishable goods through specialized refrigerated containers. This versatility allows businesses to explore diverse markets and cater to various customer demands.

Bulk cargo
Bulk cargo consists of loose materials such as grains, coal, or minerals that are loaded directly into the ship,s hold without any specific packaging.
Break bulk
Break bulk cargo includes goods too large or heavy to be placed in standard shipping containers and must be handled individually. Items such as machinery, construction materials, and oversized equipment are common examples, requiring specialised loading and handling techniques.
Containerised cargo
Containerised cargo involves goods securely packed into shipping containers, which is the most common method for transporting manufactured products.containers are used as they standardise dimensions and simplify the handling, loading, and unloading processes across global shipping facilities.
Liquid cargoes
Liquid cargoes, such as oils, chemicals, and certain gases, are transported in specially designed tankers that are equipped to handle the movement and storage of liquid substances. These tankers ensure the safe and efficient transportation of volatile and non-volatile liquids through the sea.

How to Choose Global Sea Freight
Evaluating Your Company's Needs
Start by identifying your specific shipping requirements. Consider the volume and frequency of your shipments, the types of goods you are transporting, and any special handling or storage needs.
Researching Freight Forwarders
Look for forwarders with a solid reputation and proven track record. Read reviews, ask for references, and check for industry certifications. A good forwarder should have experience in handling shipments similar to yours.
Considering Communication Style
Effective communication is crucial in international shipping. Choose a forwarder who is responsive, transparent, and easy to communicate with. They should provide regular updates and be readily available to address any concerns.
Checking Network and Partnerships
A forwarder with a strong global network and partnerships with major carriers can offer more reliable and flexible shipping options. Ensure they have established connections with key ports and transportation services in both China and the USA.
Process of Global Sea Freight
Step 1: Export Shipping
The first physical step your goods go through in the ocean shipping process is called export shipping-the transfer of your goods from the original manufacturer or exporter's warehouse to the origin warehouse. If you have experience shipping goods or own your own freight company, you can save money and complete export shipping on your own. However, if you are not familiar with the process, it is best to leave it to a professional freight forwarder.
Step 2: Export Customs Clearance
The authorities in the country of origin require that your goods be registered before they leave the country of origin. A licensed customs broker will complete the cargo declaration by checking the contents of the goods against the bill of lading and issuing a certificate of origin before the goods leave the port.
Step 3: Origin Processing
This step involves several different processes. When your goods arrive at the port of departure, they are unloaded, inspected, and checked against the booking details provided by the freight forwarder. A cargo receipt is issued to verify that the goods have been received, inspected, and are ready for shipment. The goods are boxed and loaded, ready for transoceanic transportation. The freight forwarder is always responsible for origin processing, but the payment for this process depends on the type of goods. Some of the terms you may come across are Incoterms, which are abbreviations commonly used in the international trade industry.
Step 4: Ocean Freight
Your freight forwarder will contract with the chosen shipping company to take your goods overseas. Your goods may not be on the same ship for the entire journey, but you can always check the shipping company's website for details. The freight forwarder will issue a bill of lading that states the ship and port of origin, but this is not necessarily the ship that will take your goods overseas. The shipping company that carries your goods will bill the freight forwarder directly for the ocean freight, including surcharges.
Step 5: Import Clearance
This process occurs at the port of destination, where authorities review the cargo declaration and other documents. Duties are fees and charges imposed on the products you bring into the country. If the freight forwarder holds a valid license, they can handle import clearance. Goods must pass customs before they can enter the country, and often the process can begin even before the goods arrive at the port.
Step 6: Destination Handling
This step involves everything needed to get the goods from the ship to a secure holding area or warehouse. Many documents need to change hands, including the original bill of lading. Once the goods have passed all inspections, they are sent to the warehouse for another inspection.
Step 7: Import Transportation
This final step is how the goods get to their final destination, whether it is the consignee's warehouse or a personal address. If a freight forwarder is responsible for this step, they will use their own trucks or hire a third party to transport the goods.
Verify The Condition Of The Cargo
Before loading the cargo onto the shipping container, inspect it thoroughly for any damage or defects. Ensure the packaging is intact and suitable for shipping.
Check For Proper Documentation
Review all shipping documents, including bills of lading, packing lists, and customs forms, and ensure they're accurate and complete.Inspect The Container: Examine the shipping container for any signs of damage, such as dents, cracks, or holes. Also, don't forget to check the floor, walls, and ceiling to ensure they're structurally sound.
Verify Container Cleanliness
You want the shipping container to be clean and free from contaminants or residues that could affect the cargo. This is especially crucial when handling and transporting perishable goods that may spoil during transit.
Employ Proper Loading Techniques
Ensure the cargo is loaded onto the container properly, taking weight distribution and specific handling instructions into account. Don't forget to use appropriate loading techniques to prevent shifting during transit.
Secure The Cargo
Use straps, chains, or other suitable restraints to secure the cargo within the container, minimizing the risk of movement or damage during transit.
Inspect Equipment
Regularly inspect and maintain shipping equipment such as containers, pallets, and lifting gear to ensure they're in good working condition.
Repair And Maintenance Schedule
Establish a routine maintenance schedule to address any repairs or servicing requirements for shipping containers, vehicles, and handling equipment.
