If you've been watching container freight rates lately, you might have noticed something interesting: after weeks of relentless climbing, they've softened just a little. Far East to U.S. West Coast rates dipped 5% week-on-week, Mediterranean dropped 2%, and both U.S. East Coast and North Europe eased 1%.
Cue the bears declaring the rally dead.
Not so fast.
The Big Picture: Still Massively Elevated
Yes, rates have taken a small step back. But let's put that in perspective. Far East to U.S. West Coast spot rates are still up 252% since the end of February. Far East to U.S. East Coast? Up 230%. North Europe? Still 144% above pre-crisis levels. As Xeneta senior shipping analyst Emily Stausbøll put it: "It is too early to call this a sustained decline and spot rates remain massively elevated compared to pre-crisis levels".
The Drewry World Container Index hit $4,639 per 40-foot container on July 9-its highest level since September 2024. That's not exactly a market in freefall.
What's Really Going On?
The current softening is largely a function of timing, not demand collapse. Shippers pulled forward volumes early in the peak season to avoid expected bunker adjustment factor increases and to protect supply chains from Middle East disruption. The irony? That frontloading created a capacity squeeze that pushed rates even higher than they otherwise would have been.
Essentially, peak season started in May this year instead of July. The frontloading wave has passed-for now. But that doesn't mean the underlying demand has evaporated.
Why the Rally Has More Legs
Here's what the bears are missing:
First, offered capacity on the Far East-U.S. West Coast trade hit a record four-week rolling average of approximately 350,000 TEUs. Carriers are adding ships-MSC reinstated its Pearl service, Yang Ming and ONE are running extra-loaders-and rates are still holding at historically high levels. That's not a weak market. That's a market absorbing record capacity and keeping prices elevated.
Second, carriers aren't backing down. HMM introduced a $3,000 per FEU peak season surcharge effective July 15. CMA CGM raised its Asia-North Europe FAK rate to $6,300 per 40-foot container from July 1, adding a $1,000 per TEU peak season surcharge. Drewry expects transpacific rates to keep climbing in the near term.
Third, geopolitical risk hasn't gone away. The fragile ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz could unravel at any moment. As Stausbøll warned, "Increasing military strikes between Iran and the US, while not translating directly into higher freight rates, could also pause the softening if the situation deteriorates further".
Fourth, port congestion is at a four-year high, with nearly 11% of the global container fleet tied up waiting for berths. That's not going away overnight.
What This Means for Shippers
Here's the bottom line: the rate rally isn't over. It's taking a breather. And in a market this volatile, the difference between a smooth supply chain and a costly disaster comes down to one thing: who you work with.
How Xiamen AE Global Turns Volatility into Advantage
At Xiamen AE Global, we've been navigating these exact conditions since 2018. We're a government-licensed company with IATA, FIATA, FMC, and NVOCC approvals-credentials that mean we have the global network and the relationships to move your cargo reliably, even when the market is in chaos.
With over 100 overseas agents worldwide, we handle airfreight, ocean freight, and everything in between. When carriers are scrambling to fill vessels or-conversely-when space is tight, our carrier relationships give us priority access that keeps your containers moving.
Technology That Cuts Through the Noise
We've invested heavily in technology that gives our clients real visibility-not just a tracking number, but actual intelligence about what's happening with your shipment. When rates are shifting weekly, when port congestion is building, when carriers are announcing surcharges left and right-you need to know. And more importantly, you need options.
We don't just tell you there's a problem. We give you solutions.
Local Knowledge, Global Reach
Based in Xiamen-one of Asia's busiest port cities-we're positioned at the heart of the world's major trade lanes. We've moved over 12,000 TEUs in a single year with a 98.6% on-time delivery rate for our SME clients. That's not luck. That's execution.
The Bottom Line
The container shipping market in 2026 is a rollercoaster. Early peak season, geopolitical chaos, record capacity deployment, and stubbornly high rates. The bears will tell you the rally is over. Don't believe them.
At Xiamen AE Global, we don't just move boxes. We turn complex cross-border logistics into predictable outcomes-even when the market is doing everything it can to be unpredictable.
Because when your freight rates are climbing and your containers are sitting in a congested port somewhere, you don't need a market forecast. You need a partner who can get your cargo moving.
Ready to navigate the volatility? Contact Xiamen AE Global today for smart, flexible logistics solutions that keep your supply chain on track-no matter what the market throws at you.
