Intermodal Rail Freight

Intermodal rail freight is containers and truck trailers transported by rail, often with truck or water transport at terminals. It efficiently moves various goods, including retail products, industrial items like auto parts, and agricultural goods such as grain. Collaborating with other transportation providers, freight railroads move nearly 61 tons of freight per American annually, with Chicago and Los Angeles/Long Beach leading in intermodal volume.

Advantages of rail intermodal freight

1.High level of security

Statistics show that theft of rail freight containers is relatively rare because it is difficult for criminals to get close to the train and unload the containers. In contrast, truck thefts in rest areas are more common because trucks are more accessible.

2.Multimodal compatible

Containers and trailers can be used in both road and rail freight – sometimes referred to as multimodal transport. As a result, there is no need to unload and load at the transfer station, and containers or trailers can be easily moved from the train to the truck as needed. DSV also offers bulk cargo in trailers or containers, and your cargo can be consolidated with other customers' cargo.

3.Economical and low fuel surcharges

Rail freight is efficient over long distances because one driver has fewer rest stops and transports more containers. Rail freight is usually carried out by electric locomotives, which are protected from fuel surcharges and fluctuations in oil prices.

4.Low carbon and environmental protection

Rail freight is usually carried by electric locomotives and has a large transport volume, so it is more environmentally friendly and has much lower CO2 emissions.

5.Arrive on time

Unlike road transport, rail transport does not get stuck in traffic jams, and although there are occasional delays, rail transport is much more punctual than road transport due to the control of capacity by the relevant authorities.

Q: Why would a shipper use rail intermodal?

A: It's a less expensive alternative to truckload, typically undercutting the price of the total shipment by 10%-15%. In addition, rail intermodal is more fuel-efficient than long-haul trucking which is desirable for shippers wishing to save cost while also lowering their carbon footprints. As a result, the customer is only charged about half the fuel surcharge as they would be for a truckload shipment.

Q: Why doesn't everything move via rail intermodal?

A: Volume density and robust rail infrastructure are needed for rail intermodal to be pragmatic. As a result, rail intermodal is dominated by the dense rail corridors that are anchored by very large (and far away) cities on either end of the rail long haul. In fact, about two-thirds of rail intermodal traffic travels in only seven intermodal lanes.
