CMA CGM Doubles Down On Air Freight: Why A Maintenance Move Matters For Shippers

Jun 30, 2026 Leave a message

When a shipping giant starts buying up aircraft maintenance shops, it's worth paying attention.

CMA CGM Group announced on June 12 that it has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire Crystal Aero Solutions, a France-based aircraft maintenance specialist that works on both cargo and passenger aircraft. The move is the latest signal that the ocean carrier is getting serious about its air cargo ambitions-and for businesses that move goods across borders, that's a development worth watching closely.

What's Actually Happening?

Crystal Aero Solutions is no stranger to CMA CGM AIR CARGO. The two have been partners since 2024, with Crystal already handling maintenance for the carrier's existing fleet. Headquartered at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with additional operations in Brussels and Liège, the company specializes in line and light maintenance-the kind of day-to-day work that keeps aircraft in the air and on schedule. They also deploy teams for international engine support, particularly in Africa and Asia.

The acquisition, once finalized, means CMA CGM will bring that expertise in-house. And that matters because the carrier's fleet is about to get a whole lot bigger.

The Bigger Picture: A Fleet on the Move

Right now, CMA CGM AIR CARGO operates eight freighters: five Boeing 777Fs, one Airbus A330F, and two Boeing 747Fs. But the real story is what's coming. Starting in 2027, the carrier will take delivery of eight brand-new Airbus A350Fs, making it the launch customer for the next-generation freighter.

That's a serious capacity increase-and with more planes comes more complexity. Keeping a growing fleet operational requires reliable maintenance, and that's exactly what this deal is designed to secure. As Damien Mazaudier, Senior Vice President of CMA CGM's Air Division, put it: "As our fleet continues to grow, we will be able to rely on the expertise and know-how of Crystal Aero Solutions' teams to support our operations across several strategic platforms".

What This Means for Shippers

For anyone moving cargo by air, reliability is everything. A plane that's grounded for maintenance is a shipment that's delayed. By bringing maintenance capabilities closer to its operations, CMA CGM is essentially investing in uptime-more aircraft available, more capacity on key routes, and fewer disruptions.
