New Brazil Tariffs Are About To Hit – Here's What Shippers Need To Know Now

Jul 27, 2026 Leave a message

If you're shipping anything between the U.S. and Brazil, you've probably got a pretty full inbox this week. And for good reason.

Late Wednesday, the Trump administration confirmed it's moving forward with a 25% tariff on a broad range of Brazilian imports, effective July 22. The move comes after a year-long Section 301 investigation that concluded Brazil's policies-covering everything from digital trade and ethanol market access to anti-corruption enforcement and illegal deforestation-are "unreasonable" and "discriminatory".

Brazil's government has already fired back, vowing to activate its Reciprocity Law and take the matter to the WTO. President Lula called the tariffs "illegal and arbitrarily imposed" with "no justification".

The Good News? There's a Long Exemption List

Not everything from Brazil is getting hit. The USTR has exempted more than 2,000 products-including coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, aircraft parts, pig iron, leather, seafood, and certain pharmaceutical ingredients. The logic? These are either not produced in the U.S., or tariffs would cause more damage to American supply chains than pressure on Brazil.

But here's the catch: the tariff still applies to a huge chunk of Brazilian exports-about 40% of what Brazil sends to the U.S.. Sectors like agricultural machinery, apparel, footwear, electrical equipment, and organic sugar didn't make the cut. And ethanol? It's getting taxed too.

What This Means for Your Supply Chain

For importers and exporters, this isn't just a policy story-it's a logistics headache.

Brazilian exports to the U.S. were already down 13% ($2.6 billion) in the first half of the year, driven largely by an 8.7% drop in industrial goods. This new tariff is going to make that worse. The National Confederation of Industry in Brazil warned that 20 of the country's 27 states have already reduced exports to the U.S. market-and the situation is about to get tougher.

For shippers, the ripple effects are real: higher landed costs, more complex customs planning, and the very real possibility of shipments getting held up while everyone figures out the new rules.

And Then There's the Trade Deal Puzzle

Here's where it gets even more complicated. While the U.S. is slapping tariffs on Brazil, other major trade agreements are quietly coming into force.

The EU-US trade agreement-which Flexport's global customs director described as having "kind of snuck in on us"-took effect this month, providing duty-free status for selected U.S.-origin chemicals, pharmaceuticals, metals, and machinery. Meanwhile, the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement entered force on July 15. The EU-Mercosur agreement is also reshaping competition in Brazil's capital goods market.

What does that mean for you? It means global trade policy is moving in multiple directions at once. Tariffs going up in one place. Duties coming down in another. And if you're not on top of all of it, you could be paying more than you need to-or watching your containers sit while your competitors' move.

This Is Where Experience Actually Matters

At Xiamen AE Global, we've been navigating this kind of complexity since 2018. We're a government-licensed company with IATA, FIATA, FMC, and NVOCC credentials-which means when trade policy shifts, we have the global network and the expertise to keep your cargo moving.

We work with over 100 overseas agents worldwide, giving us real-time visibility into customs requirements, routing options, and cost implications across multiple trade lanes. When a 25% tariff hits, we're not scrambling to figure out what it means for your shipment-we're already helping you classify your goods correctly, explore exemption eligibility, and adjust your supply chain strategy.

Technology That Cuts Through the Noise

We've invested heavily in technology that gives our clients actual transparency-not just a tracking number, but real insights into how policy changes affect their bottom line. When we see a tariff announcement like this, we alert you immediately and walk you through your options. Reroute through a different port? Adjust your Incoterms? Accelerate shipments before the July 22 deadline? We've got the data and the experience to make those calls quickly.

Local Knowledge Where It Counts

Based in Xiamen-one of Asia's busiest port cities-we understand how a U.S.-Brazil tariff dispute ripples through global supply chains. We've moved over 12,000 TEUs in a single year with a 98.6% on-time delivery rate for our SME clients. That's not luck. It's the result of relentless execution and a network that doesn't fall apart when the rules change.

The Bottom Line

The U.S.-Brazil tariff situation isn't going away. And with other trade agreements reshaping the landscape at the same time, navigating global shipping has never been more complicated.

But here's the thing: complexity is exactly what we're built for. At Xiamen AE Global, we don't just move boxes. We turn complicated cross-border logistics into predictable supply chains-even when trade policy is moving in a dozen different directions.

Because when your containers are sitting in a yard somewhere, waiting for customs to clear or a tariff exemption to be confirmed, you don't need a news alert. You need a partner who can get them moving again.
