New Vessels, New Routes: What The Asia-Latin America Capacity Surge Means For Shippers

If you've been watching the container shipping market lately, you've probably noticed something unusual: while the rest of the industry frets about overcapacity, the Asia-Latin America trade lane is quietly booming.

Shipping lines are pouring new vessels into this corridor at a pace that's turning heads. Just in the past few weeks, two major newbuilds-the 13,136 TEU CMA CGM Copper and the 8,900 TEU Maersk Tokyo-have been assigned straight to Asia-South America services. The CMA CGM Copper, one of a series of 12 methanol-enabled sister ships, is heading to the Asia-West Coast South America ACSA 1 service, while Maersk Tokyo joins the Danish operator's AC 3 service on the same lane.

And they're not alone. Maersk just launched a brand-new weekly service called AC1, connecting Ningbo and Busan directly to Lazaro Cardenas (Mexico), Buenaventura (Colombia), and Posorja (Ecuador). The service deploys eight vessels ranging from 3,400 to 13,200 TEU and completes a full loop in about 56 days. Meanwhile, MSC has rolled out its own Sierra service, adding seven ships between 4,000 and 9,000 TEU to the Far East-Mexico trade. ZIM is joining the party too, with its new ZIM Falcon Service (ZFS) connecting Asia to the East Coast of South America starting this September.

Why all the sudden activity?

Simple: demand is surging. South American containerized import volumes grew 9.1% year-on-year from January to April 2026, with April alone seeing a 10.5% jump. The driving force? China. Shipments from Greater China increased by nearly 20% year-on-year and now account for 40% of the region's total imports. Brazil remains the powerhouse, contributing 26% of total import volumes with a 14% annual increase.

According to Alphaliner, capacity deployed to Latin America-related services has now hit 4.1 million TEU-that's 1 million TEU more than just two years ago. The lion's share comes from Asia, with roughly 1.53 million TEU deployed on Asia-South America west coast services and 860,000 TEU on east coast services.

What does this mean for your supply chain?

On one hand, more capacity means more options. More vessels, more sailings, more flexibility in routing. On the other hand, navigating this rapidly shifting landscape requires real-time visibility, strong carrier relationships, and the ability to adapt quickly-qualities that aren't always easy to find.

That's where XMAE Logistics comes in.

As a government-licensed freight forwarder with IATA, FIATA, FMC, and NVOCC approvals, we've been helping businesses move goods from China to destinations worldwide since 2018. Our network spans over 100 overseas agents, and we handle everything from ocean freight and airfreight to customs clearance, warehousing, and project cargo.

Here's how we're helping clients make the most of this capacity surge:

  1. Smart capacity sourcing. We don't tie ourselves to a single carrier or route. Our long-term partnerships give us access to competitive rates and secure space-even when the market gets tight.
  2. End-to-end visibility. More capacity sometimes means more operational complexity. Our tracking systems keep you informed at every step, so you're never left guessing where your shipment is.
  3. Real-time market intelligence. We actively monitor rate trends and capacity shifts across the Asia-Latin America trade, advising clients on optimal booking times and contract structures.
  4. Tailored routing strategies. Whether you need to move containers from Ningbo to Mexico, Shanghai to Brazil, or anywhere in between, we design solutions that balance speed, cost, and reliability.

The Asia-Latin America trade is evolving fast. New services are launching, new vessels are arriving, and new opportunities are emerging every week. The question isn't whether there's capacity-it's whether you have the right partner to navigate it.

At XMAE Logistics, we believe that even in a crowded market, there's always room for better service, sharper strategy, and stronger partnerships. Ready to turn this capacity surge into a competitive advantage for your business?
