If you're in logistics, you probably don't need a podcast to tell you that things are getting complicated out there. But just in case you missed the headlines, here's what's been happening – and why it matters for your cargo.
The Geopolitical Mess That Won't Quit
Let's start with the big one. The US-Iran escalation continues to cast a long shadow over global shipping. The Strait of Hormuz – that narrow chokepoint through which about a fifth of the world's oil and a significant chunk of containerised cargo flows – remains in the spotlight. MarineTraffic data shows vessel transits through the strait have dropped 28%. Meanwhile, the Red Sea isn't getting any quieter either, with Houthi forces stepping up activity and even announcing a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia.
Here's the twist, though: some container lines are starting to edge back towards Suez. MSC recently decided to partially restore Suez Canal transits on a limited number of its East-West services. It's a cautious move – a "we'll dip our toes back in but keep one eye on the security reports" kind of approach. But it signals that carriers are weighing the cost of the longer Cape route against the risk of the Red Sea.
Port Congestion? It's Getting Worse Before It Gets Better
If you thought port congestion was easing up, think again.
North Asia is the epicentre right now. Of the 3.92 million TEU of vessel capacity waiting for a berth globally, a staggering 56% is tied up in the Shanghai-Ningbo basin. Typhoon Saudel tore through the region last week, causing terminal operations to grind to a halt and extending delays beyond ten days in the worst cases. Ningbo's container yards are pushing 95% occupancy, with average vessel waiting times of 3.5 days. Shanghai isn't much better – just under five days.
And it's not just Asia. Northern Europe is a mess too. Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven are all among the world's most congested ports. More than 160,000 TEU of containership capacity was waiting at anchor outside those three ports at the end of last week. Then came the strikes – 11,000 German dockworkers walked out for 48 hours, followed by industrial action in Rotterdam and other Dutch ports. Any backlog generated during those stoppages is going to take time to clear.
The Middle East isn't faring much better. Khor Fakkan is seeing vessel waiting times exceed seven days, while Sohar in Oman is dealing with berthing delays of seven to 14 days. Carriers are piling on surcharges – RCL slapped a $450 per container fee on shipments into Khor Fakkan, and MSC is charging $500 per box into Jeddah. Hapag-Lloyd has even started charging a $1,000 "dangerous goods premium" on hazardous boxes shipped from Europe to Jeddah.
And just to add another layer of complexity, the Panama Canal is tightening its belt. Starting September 3, daily Neopanamax slots were reduced to nine, with Panamax availability set to drop further.
Air Freight: A Tale of Two Markets
Air cargo is showing a strange divergence right now. Transpacific rates are surging – up about 30% – while the China-to-Europe corridor is seeing a more modest 12% rise. What's behind the difference? The European Union's decision to eliminate the 'de minimis' customs exemption has thrown a spanner in the works. Outbound air tonnages from Hong Kong to Europe plummeted 33% year-on-year as a result.
The Freightos Air Index shows rates to Europe ticking up slightly to around $4.60/kg, while transpacific rates are sitting higher at about $6.30/kg. CH Robinson is already warning customers to expect capacity shortages on certain Asia export lanes in the second half of September. If you're shipping air freight out of Asia, the message is clear: don't wait.
What This Means for Your Supply Chain
Here's the reality. Geopolitical tensions aren't going away. Port congestion is spreading from Asia to Europe to the Middle East. Air freight capacity is tightening. And carriers are using every opportunity to pass on costs through surcharges.
This is exactly the kind of environment where having the right logistics partner makes all the difference.
How We Can Help
At Xiamen AE Global, we've been navigating exactly this kind of chaos since 2018. We're a government-licensed company with IATA, FIATA, FMC, and NVOCC credentials – which means when the world gets complicated, we have the global network and the relationships to keep your cargo moving.
We work with over 100 overseas agents worldwide. When a typhoon shuts down Shanghai, we don't read about it in the news and figure out what to do. We're already talking to our partners on the ground about alternative routings, vessel options, and contingency plans.
1. Real Relationships, Real Options
When Khor Fakkan is backed up for seven days, we're not waiting around hoping it clears. We're looking at alternatives – other gateways, different routings, whatever it takes to get your cargo where it needs to go. Our network gives us visibility into what's actually happening at each port, not just what the official notices say.
2. Technology That Cuts Through the Noise
We've invested heavily in real-time visibility tools that give our clients actual transparency – not just a tracking number, but actionable insight into what's happening with their shipments. When a strike hits Rotterdam or a surcharge lands on Jeddah, we alert you immediately and present options.
3. Local Knowledge, Global Reach
Based in Xiamen – one of Asia's busiest port cities – we combine global reach with the kind of local knowledge that only comes from moving all kinds of goods for over a decade. We've moved over 12,000 TEUs in a single year with a 98.6% on-time delivery rate for our SME clients.
The Bottom Line
Geopolitics, port congestion, rising air freight rates – it's a lot to keep track of. But here's the thing: you don't have to navigate it alone.
At Xiamen AE Global, we don't just move boxes. We help our clients navigate complexity – whether that's finding an alternative route around a congested port, securing air freight capacity when it's tight, or simply making sure your cargo gets where it needs to go without paying more than you should.
Because when the world is this complicated, you don't need a spectator. You need a partner who knows how to keep your cargo moving.
Ready to work with a logistics partner who actually understands today's market? Contact Xiamen AE Global today – and let's keep your supply chain moving, no matter what comes next.
