PSA Mumbai has officially inaugurated its Phase 2 expansion, solidifying its position as India's largest container terminal. With this development, the terminal's annual handling capacity has doubled to 4.8 million TEUs, a significant leap that promises to enhance India's trade capabilities and supply chain resilience.

A Milestone Inauguration

On September 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore virtually inaugurated the second phase of the JNPort PSA Terminal (BMCT). This event marks the culmination of a $1.3 billion investment by PSA International, representing the largest foreign direct investment from Singapore into India to date.

Key Features of the Expanded Terminal

  1. Unmatched Capacity and Scale: The terminal now boasts 2,000 meters of continuous quay length, allowing it to accommodate multiple mega container vessels simultaneously. This infrastructure is designed to support India's growing domestic and international trade volumes.
  2. Advanced Rail Connectivity: The facility is equipped with six Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC)-compatible rail tracks, linking Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) in Maharashtra to over 63 Inland Container Depots (ICDs) across India. This integration ensures seamless multimodal logistics efficiency, aligning with India's PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
  3. Sustainability Initiatives: PSA Mumbai is committed to green operations. The terminal is already powered by renewable energy, and there are plans to progressively electrify diesel-dependent equipment. A newly inaugurated 1.3-hectare solar farm is expected to generate 13% of the terminal's annual power needs and reduce carbon emissions by over 1,200 tonnes yearly.
  4. Job Creation: The expansion has generated over 1,500 skilled jobs in technical, supervisory, and administrative roles, including crane operators, logistics coordinators, and systems analysts.

Why This Matters for Logistics and Trade

The expansion of PSA Mumbai is a game-changer for India's logistics landscape. By doubling its capacity, the terminal is poised to:

  • Reduce congestion at major Indian ports.
  • Cut turnaround times for vessels and cargo.
  • Enhance connectivity between ports and inland markets.
  • Strengthen India's position in global trade networks.

For businesses like XMAE Logistics, this means more efficient supply chains, faster delivery times, and improved scalability for import-export operations. The enhanced rail network will particularly benefit logistics providers by enabling smoother inland distribution and reducing dependency on road transport.

Looking Ahead

PSA Mumbai's Phase 2 expansion is not just about capacity; it's about building a future-ready logistics ecosystem. With its focus on sustainability, digitalization, and multimodal connectivity, the terminal sets a new benchmark for port infrastructure in India and beyond.

At XMAE Logistics, we are excited to leverage these advancements to deliver even greater value to our customers. As India's trade landscape evolves, we remain committed to providing innovative and efficient logistics solutions tailored to your needs.
